Footpath Maintenance

The Silver Slashers are a group of Ynys Môn Ramblers dedicated to keeping our footpaths in fine fettle. We are a mixed bunch of artisans, professionals and others with no experience of manual work at all; 20-30% are women; most of us are passed retiring age. We meet on Fridays, 2-4 times a month, at 10.00 and finish around 3.00, with short breaks for coffee and lunch. We all possess a sense of humour – vital when up to your fetlocks in mud! But what really keeps us turning up is seeing what we’ve achieved at the end of the day.

What Do We Do?

The Councils’ Footpath Team and John Stubbs, Footpath Maintenance Secretary decide what needs to be done and where. Mainly this is improving access on the Coastal Footpath and work on inland paths to provide circular routes to communities. So we might be replacing a ladder stile with a kissing gate, building a bridge over a stream, cutting back overgrowth or building boardwalks over a boggy bit – there’s not much we can’t tackle!

Recent Work

In Llanielian we erected 3 H frame stiles, 1 ladder stile and installed a way mark post to reopen a path. Grid Ref: SH 461 899 – set foot where no-one has for years!

At Ciam we cleared rhododendrons and built raised boardwalks making a really lovely woodland ramble. Grid Ref: SH 621 808 - give it a go!
